Welcome to the Washington Statistical Society
Dear Colleague, The growing importance of statistical methods and data to our nation's progress and well-being makes it critical for users and practitioners to keep current and connected. Whether you are interested in continuing your own statistical education, helping to develop the next generation of statisticians, simply networking or participating in a vital local statistics community, please join us as a member. It's a good time for statistics! Serving the metropolitan Washington, DC area, the Washington Statistical Society (WSS) is the largest, most active chapter of the American Statistical Association (ASA) with about 1,000 members. Our members work in the government, academic, and private sectors, spanning many disciplines. Mirroring the ubiquity of statistics, members' interests and expertise cover an extensive range of areas in applied and theoretical statistics, data collection, survey methods, and allied subjects. Our activities include a large and varied technical seminar program, short courses, social events, the annual Julius Shiskin Award for outstanding achievement in economic statistics, and service opportunities. Selected seminars are available in multiple locations via video-conferencing. WSS members receive our monthly email newsletter (The WSS News), with announcements and descriptions of forthcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and listings of job openings and job-seeking members' credentials. Over 60 interesting, amiable, and competent volunteers help WSS serve the community thorough its Executive Board, Program Chairs, and Appointed Committees. Hundreds more participate in our educational, social, and outreach activities every year. Committed to ASA's quantitative literacy goals for pre-college students and the community at large, WSS rewards outstanding statistical work at area science fairs, sponsors a school project competition for the Curtis Jacobs award, provides volunteers for career days, and judges posters in the annual ASA competition. In addition, we sponsor numerous awards for outstanding local statisticians and students.
