Fall 2000 Quick Reference Guide

 

SCS Office: The main administrative office for the School of Computational Sciences (SCS) is located in Science and Technology, Building 1, Room 103. You may reach the main office by calling 993-1990. Office hours are between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. SCS Program Forms may be picked up in the main office during these hours. Please call Gail Hodges at 993-4044 if you have questions or concerns or need further assistance. Graduate Program Coordinator, Dr. Peter Becker, is also available for assistance at 993-3619.

Bioinformatics Students: Bioinformatics and Computational Biology courses, instructors, and administration are located on the Prince William Campus. The SCS Bioinformatics Ph.D. Program Coordinator is Dr. D. Curtis Jamison (cjamison@gmu.edu), telephone 993-8426. The SCS Bioinformatics M.S. Program Coordinator is Dr. John J Grefenstette (jgrefens@gmu.edu), telephone 993-8398. Student Ids: Students who have registered for classes may obtain their university student identification cards in Student Union 2 (SUB 2) Lower Level from 9 am - 5 pm, Monday - Friday.

Registering for Classes and Accessing Your Schedule: Can be done from home by simply dialing 993-4GMU (4468). Need assistance? Dial 993-4HLP (4457) for on-line assistance. When your are asked for your nine-digit ID number, enter your social security number or student identification number. When you are asked for your pin number, enter the month and day of your birth. Further information may be obtained in the Schedule of Classes.

Immunizations: All students must have an immunization card on file with the Student Health Center by the start of the semester. Questions or concerns regarding the immunization requirements may be directed to 993-2836.

Health Insurance: Students do not need to have health insurance through the university. If you do want health insurance through the university, it is available. The annual policy is $676 (accident and health insurance plan, dental $129 and vision $140). For more information, please call 993-2827.

Parking: A parking decal can be purchased on the Lower Level of SUB 2. Please bring your student ID and license plate number of your vehicle. For more information, call 993-2710. For motorist assistance, call 993-2715. Please remember you will be given a $75 ticket for vehicles without a proper decal.

Libraries: Fenwick and Johnson Center Library Hours are Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to midnight; Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to midnight. Hours are extended at the end of each semester and shortened during semester breaks. Fenwick general information can be reached at 993-2250. Johnson Center Reference Desk can be reached at 993-9070. Bookstore: The Campus Bookstore is located in the Johnson Center and sells new and used textbooks, as well as other books, stationery, supplies, imprinted clothing, gifts, music, greeting cards, and a variety of other convenience items. The Bookstore hours are: Monday to Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Bank: Students can cash checks at United Bank (located on the 1st Floor of the Johnson Center, next to the Bookstore) for up to $25 a day. A valid student ID and driver’s license are needed.

Postal Service: Students can buy stamps and mail packages and letters through the Mail Service Center located in the lower level of Student Union II. The Mail Service Center also processes domestic, international, certified, insured, and express mail. All transactions are on a cash-only basis. Courtesy drop points for outgoing stamped mail are located at the Mail Service Center and in the Johnson Center. The hours of operation for the Mail Service Center are Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and the telephone number is 993-2691.

SCS Mailboxes: All full-time and part-time students are assigned mailboxes in the Administrative Office (Room 101, Science and Technology I). Please check your folder frequently for notices on colloquia and seminars that may be of interest to you.

Inclement Weather Information: In the event of inclement weather, the university announces cancellations or delays through the University Switchboard (993-1000), the information radio station (1610 AM), and local area radio and television stations.

Mason Money: Mason Money is a debit card system. Funds are accessed using the All-University Photo ID card. Mason Money Food Service funds provide tax-free dining for students at on-campus dining facilities and at select off-campus locations. Mason Money retail funds are accepted at the Campus Bookstore, Express (convenience store), Patriot Center, Copy Shop (course material and photocopying), Student Health Services, the Gameroom (located on the first floor of Student Union I), Parking Services, all dining services, and for Mason Lines payments.
