The organization and governance of the school follow the general policies of George Mason University, as expressed in the faculty Handbook and other university documents. The bylaws of the School of Computational Sciences were approved unanimously at the general faculty meeting on November 20, 2002, and are available here. A summary of the administrative structure of the school is provided below. The academic and research activities of the School of Computational Sciences are organized into several units termed Programs. The Programs are semi-autonomous units with their own faculty and Chairs. Descriptions of the current Programs can be accessed by clicking here. Governance of the school has three components: a Dean, an Advisory Board, and an Executive Council representing the program faculty of the school. The chief administrator of the school is the Dean, who reports to the university Provost. The Dean has the responsibilities and duties ordinarily associated with such an academic position, including the responsibility for budgetary and personnel issues for the school, and the duty to provide leadership within the program faculty and to represent the school in external relations. The Dean may, as appropriate, delegate responsibility and create, with the advice and consent of the Provost and the Executive Council, additional administrative faculty positions within the school. At levels below the Dean, there is strong heritage from the mechanisms of governance that have worked well for the existing institutes. The Executive Council, which is the executive body of the program faculty, is comprised of representatives elected by the program faculty from their own membership. The Executive Council develops policies and procedures governing the academic programs of the school, and the appointment, promotion, and tenure of faculty of the school. In addition, the Council performs the second level of review of faculty for promotion and tenure. The Council may also form committees, both standing and ad-hoc, to administer procedures relating to the academic programs and to faculty promotion and tenure. In addition, the Council provides advice to the Dean on programmatic, research, personnel, budgetary, external relations, and other matters of the school as requested by the Dean. The Advisory Board, whose members and chair are appointed by the university President and includes representatives from government, academia and industry, provides an independent assessment of the activities of the school, provides advice to the Dean, and gives a report to the Provost on an annual basis and from time-to-time.
