The seminar will be conducted in the form of a workshop. Participants are encouraged to put R on their own laptops, and to bring them to the seminars.
The main reference text is Linear Models with R, by Julian Faraway.
Data, code, and errata for the book are available at
the author's website for the text.
There are a number of useful books on R. A list of books is available at the "Books" link on the main webpage for the R Project.
Frank Harrell has a very useful website on S/R resources. One of the links at that site is to a very useful introductory manual on S (and R) by Carlos Alzola and Harrell.

GW symposium. No meeting.
Dr. Laura Rodman of Nielsen Engineering in Mountain View, CA, will give a talk on association rules for spatial data. Association rules are a form of data mining where inferences are made associating certain variable values with other specific variable values. They are widely used in businesses, for example when amazon.com tells you which books you might be interested in based on past purchases. Association rules for spatial data may take the form of, for example, associating road density with land classification as urban, suburban or rural. Dr. Rodman has developed a software package called ASPECT which performs spatial association both vertically (between variables) and horizontally (based on spatial relationships such as distance within a given variable). This package runs as an add-on module to the ArcGIS geographic information system. The talk will briefly cover the background of spatial association rules and then will feature a demonstration of the ASPECT software.
